Last decade warmest on record

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has just declared the last decade as the hottest on record for Australia. The decade average temperature was nearly half a degree higher than the average over the period 1961-1990.

2009 in particular stood out for all the wrong reasons. Apart from being 0.9 degrees warmer than the average, it was a year characterised by "extreme bushfires, dust-storms, lingering rainfall deficiencies, areas of flooding and record-breaking heatwaves", according to the BOM.
